Blantyre (Agenzia Fides) – The first 2026 meeting of the National Council of Diocesan Directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Malawi, organized by the country's National Direction, led by Father Peter Ephraim Madeya, concluded on Friday, March 13, with a Eucharistic liturgy celebrated at the Nantipwiri Pastoral Center in the Archdiocese of Blantyre.
This meeting, which brought together representatives from all eight dioceses of Malawi and began on March 9, provided an opportunity to review the progress made so far and, above all, to define the steps ahead.
"In-person meetings are essential because they strengthen missionary communion, provide formation, and show the way," commented Father Madeya.
At the opening of the meeting, whose central theme was the message for the upcoming World Mission Day 2026, “One in Christ, United in Mission,” the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Blantyre, George Buleya, delivered an introductory speech that set the tone for the working sessions. “It is fundamental to ‘be one with Christ’ and to be united among ourselves in our missionary work,” explained Vicar General Buleya. “We must avoid,” he added, “a spirit of unnecessary competition and division among ourselves. Unity is essential for effective missionary work.”
The meeting then continued with the presentation of various reports that highlighted, despite often limited resources, the tireless commitment of the eight dioceses. Among the topics discussed was the national celebration of the centenary of World Mission Day, which will be held in the Diocese of Mzuzu on October 3, 2026. Two practical planning and drafting sessions proved very useful for the diocesan directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) present at the initiative. During the first session, they were able to jointly evaluate the effectiveness of the activity plan implemented between 2021 and 2026, thus laying the foundation for developing a new future plan for missionary animation and formation; during the second session, they participated in a workshop on drafting project proposals for the development of their respective diocesan offices.
