Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - 1,400 children and adolescents, aged between 8 and 14, accompanied by 200 leaders from the country's eight dioceses, are expected to arrive in Lilongwe today. They will be the protagonists of the 1st National Congress on Childhood, promoted by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, organized by the local Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), and with the support of the International Secretariat of the Pontifical Missionary Childhood Society. The theme of the event, scheduled from July 31 to August 4 at the Don Bosco Parish in Lilongwe, is "Children are Missionaries of Hope," following the message of the upcoming World Mission Day 2025. Everything is also ready at the Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, which will be transformed into a accommodation for participants. The Congress seeks to sow the seed of the missionary spirit in future generations, so that children and adolescents become ‘evangelizers’ among their peers. The theme of the Congress is "Children pray for children and help other children."
The sessions will feature a wide variety of activities: sports, choir festivals, Bible quizzes, theater, cultural dances, talent shows, and discussions on spiritual and human development, Catholic doctrine, sacraments, liturgy, mental well-being, child protection, child trafficking and labor, children and technology, and, finally, climate change.
“In the Catholic Church in Malawi, and particularly in the Pontifical Missionary Childhood Society, we are filled with joy and enthusiasm for this great and long-awaited event, the first in our history,” explains the director of the PMS in Malawi, Father Ephraim Peter Madeya, who also followed the entire preparatory phase of this Congress, which was held at the diocesan and national levels through dedicated committees.
The Congress sessions will be led by local and international guests, including Sister Inês Paulo Albino A.S.C., Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Childhood Society; and Dalia Braithwaite, Coordinator of Missionary Education for the Archdiocese of Boston. The Director of the Pontifical Missionary Childhood Societies, Father Kizito Nhundu, will also arrive from Zimbabwe with about fifteen delegates. (EG) (Agenzia Fides, 29/7/2025)
