Manila (Agenzia Fides) - "Since the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has always highlighted the problem of human trafficking and exploitation. We thank him for this, because the issue, thanks to him, is back on the political agenda at an international level. I believe that his moral authority can do much to push governments to do more to combat this phenomenon": says Fr. Shay Cullen, Irish missionary, to Agenzia Fides, who in the Philippines created and leads the PREDA Foundation, which takes care to save, protect and reintegrate people (especially children and women) victims of human trafficking, exploitation and sexual slavery into society.
According to the missionary, "Pope Francis is trying to revive a prophetic voice in the church on behalf of the oppressed and marginalized. Through his example, he invites all Christians to follow and imitate Jesus Christ and his Gospel". In particular, we see that "the mission of combating human trafficking is an issue he has at heart: on several occasions he made statements and also concrete actions so that the exploitation of women and children is on the political and social agenda. Children and women living on the streets are the most vulnerable". "I think the Pope's words - said Fr. Cullen – have been crucial and have entered the list of priorities of sustainable development goals of the United Nations". (Agenzia Fides 26/09/2015)
