Arequipa (Agenzia Fides) – Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Special Envoy of the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI , to celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of the creation of the diocese of Arequipa, arrived at Lima's Rodriguez Ballon Airport on 13 July. The Cardinal, welcomed by the diocesan authorities led by Bishop Javier Del Río Alba, will preside 5 days of celebrations to close the Jubilee Year from today Wednesday 14 July to Sunday 18 July.
According to information sent to Fides by the press office of the archdiocese, today 14 July, Cardinal Re will have a meeting with seminarians, religious and priests at the San Jeronimo Archdiocesan Seminary in Arequipa. In the evening at 6pm he will inaugurate an International Historical-Theological Congress which will be held at Colegio de Abogados Meeting Centre, until Friday 16. The Congress will focus on the principal theme: “The Catholic Identity of Arequipa”. The initiative aims to deepen awareness of the Catholic identity forged in the 400 years of diocesan history, with the participation of internationally, nationally and locally renowned speakers. Interventions will be given by Fr Luca Mazzinghi (from the Pontificio Istituto Biblico, Rome), Fr Silverio Nieto Núñez (director of the juridical service of the Spanish Bishops' Conference, Madrid). Another important speaker will be Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, archbishop of Lima and Primate of Peru. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 14/07/2010)
