AFRICA/MADAGASCAR - Appointment of the Bishop of Ambatondrazaka

Vatican City (Fides News Agency) - The Holy Father Francis has appointed the Reverend Orthasie Marcellin Herivonjilalaina, S.A.C - thus far the Rector of the Major Philosophical Seminary of Toamasina - Bishop of the Diocese of Ambatondrazaka.

Orthasie Marcellin Herivonjilalaina was born on September 13, 1979 in Morarano Chrome (Madagascar), in the Diocese of Ambatondrazaka. After studying Philosophy at the Saint Paul Major Seminary and Theology at the Archbishop's Seminary in Reggio Calabria, he obtained a Licentiate in Theology from the Pius XI Theological Institute, and a Master's Degree in Bioethics and Sexology in Messina.

He was ordained a priest on January 21, 2006, for the Diocese of Ambatondrazaka.

He held the following positions and carried out the following further studies: Parish Vicar of Santa Maria Maddalena in Campo Calabro, Italy (2006-2008); Rector of the Saint Pierre Minor Seminary in Ambatondrazaka (2008-2009); Doctorate in Foundations and Perspectives of a Culture of Unity from the Sophia University Institute in Loppiano; Parish Vicar of Santa Maria Regina, in Matassino, as well as of San Miniato, in Montanino (2011-2015); Theology teacher at the Saint Jean Marie Vianney Major Seminary in Moramanga (2015-2021); since 2021, Rector and Prefect of Studies at the Saint François de Sales Major Philosophical Seminary in Toamasina.
