Puerto Maldonado (Agenzia Fides) - Representatives of parishes, communities and organizations that make up the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Maldonado gathered in person for the VIII General Assembly, held in the city of Quillabamba, which had as its theme "Interculturality, missionary disciples in synodality". The meeting was held from March 4 to 6 and brought together more than 150 people from Ucayali, Madre de Dios and Cusco. According to information from the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, the assembly began with a Holy Mass, then the delegations and the 2022-2026 Pastoral Plan were presented, which aims to build the dreams and realities of pastoral agents in various areas, an objective to be achieved in the long term with the participation of all the living forces of this local Church in the Amazon. The document was prepared by the Pastoral Council of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Maldonado and, as explained by Monsignor David Martínez de Aguirre, Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Maldonado, this Pastoral Plan is the fruit of the ecclesial journey reactivated during the last Assembly of the Vicariate in February 2019, following the visit of Pope Francis. Since this meeting, in the zonal assemblies, the deaneries, the parishes and the various pastoral platforms of the Vicariate, work has been carried out to respond to the challenge launched to have a Pastoral Plan for the Vicariate. Ten lines of action have been identified to give cohesion to everyone's action. During the Assembly, the Bishop noted that the Special Synod for the Amazon and the Exhortation "Querida Amazonia" have been sources of inspiration and animation in this process. The proclamation of the Gospel, the communities around Jesus, service above all to the poorest and the celebration of faith and life, are the four axes that shape the life project of the Vicariate of Puerto Maldonado. "We recognize how far we have come and feel challenged to continue growing and overcoming inertia", reads the presentation of the document.
"The peoples of the Amazon have probably never been threatened as they are today, as Pope Francis pointed out to us in Puerto Maldonado, by significant social changes and devastating pressure on their territories. We are convinced that the action of Jesus through the community of believers is an effective and transformative response to these realities. With Jesus, we want to respond to this call and be 'light of the world and salt of the earth' ", reiterated Monsignor Martínez de Aguirre.
The Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Maldonado, erected on March 10, 1949, includes the region of Madre de Dios, the province of La Convención and a district of the province of Quispicanchi in the region of Cusco, the province of Purús and a district of the province of Atalaya in the Ucayali region. The population is 356,160, of whom 285,000 are Catholic, it has 24 parishes, 6 chapels, 28 diocesan priests and 17 religious, 3 non- religious and 21 nuns. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 10/3/2022)
