Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - Although 44% of seats are to be scrutinized, Danilo Medina, current President of the Dominican Republic, has been declared the winner of the elections.
"What has happened is a victory of the people", he said yesterday afternoon to his supporters during a rally in the capital, Santo Domingo.
Since the start of the vote count Medina, who represents the Dominican Liberation Party, maintained a lead of more than twenty points on his main opponent, entrepreneur Luis Abinader, of the modern Revolutionary Party.
About 7 million Dominicans were called to vote on a choice of eight candidates (see Fides 12/05/2016), but Luis Medina’s main opponent has always been Luis Abinader. The Dominican Labour Party (LDP) of Medina won four of the previous presidential elections and has controlled Congress for a decade.
According to the press of the region, the Country maintains one of the most dynamic Latin American economies, but more than 40 percent of the population still lives below the poverty line. According to the opposition, the government of Medina manages an economy that does not generate jobs. It grows, but produces only informal work and of poor quality. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 17/05/2016)
