New Delhi (Agenzia Fides) - "Religious tolerance is an expression of mercy and is a hallmark of Indian society. India is not a theocracy, it is not a mono-religious state but is a deeply pluralistic nation. Its Constitution guarantees equality of all citizens, regardless of their faith". This is what Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, head of the Syro-Malabar diocese of Faridabad-Delhi writes in a pastoral letter released on the eve of the Jubilee of Mercy.
In the text sent to Fides, the Archbishop notes that "some ultra-religious fundamentalists have begun to question the very foundations of the Indian Constitution". This, he said, could "disintegrate the country and produce harmful sectarianism". "Whatever the ideology or political beliefs of a government are, we must always respect the constitution and serve the country according to the values contained in the Constitution", he said, condemning the recent incidents due to religious intolerance, which hit minorities like Christians and Muslims.
The Church in India rejects sectarian policy and asks Indian citizens of all faiths to engage in healing divisions and social policies based on caste or religion. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 16/12/2015)
