AFRICA/GUINEA - Outgoing President in the lead in the provisional results of the presidential elections

Tuesday, 20 October 2015 elections

Conakry (Agenzia Fides) - Outgoing President Alpha Condé appears in the lead in the provisional results of the presidential elections held in the Republic of Guinea on 11 October. According to figures published on October 17 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Condé obtained 57,85% of the votes, against 31.44% of Cellou Dalein Diallo. If the final results confirm these percentages, Condé will be elected directly in the first round, having reached the absolute majority (50% plus one vote) needed to win without going to the ballot.
The opposition, formed by Diallo and six other candidates had denounced electoral fraud (see Fides 13/10/2015). The election observer mission sent to the Country by the European Union urged INEC to provide detailed results of all the polling stations, to allow each candidate to carry out recourse to the Constitutional Court, which will have to make the vote valid.
