Calcutta (Agenzia Fides) - Ensuring food security for every citizen: is what the "Right to Food and Work Network" demands and in West Bengal has launched a campaign calling on the government to comply with the national law on food safety. In a note sent to Fides, the network, which includes a number of Christian non-governmental organizations also calls for adequate wages for workers and respect for basic measures of social justice and respect for human dignity.
According to the network, the State should not only "distribute food", it should take steps to encourage agriculture and protect the land from flooding, ensuring the subsistence of large numbers of rural people who in India represent 73% of the entire population. The network notes "the great distance that exists between millions of people below the poverty line and an elite of millionaires". (PA) (Agenzia Fides 05/10/2015)
