Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - The Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo, His Exc. Mgr. Amancio Escapa Aparicio, O.C.D., condemned the waste of food on the occasion of political and social events, stressing that with the food that is wasted one could feed more than half of the people suffering from hunger in the country. Mgr. Escapa spoke at the opening of the "First Regional Dialogue on food waste" that is held under the slogan: "Towards the construction of a regional alliance for the reduction of waste".
The meeting, organized by government authorities, takes place on 29 and 30 September in Santo Domingo, and counts on the support and the presence of senior members of the Church, as an institution at the forefront of aid towards the needy, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and other institutions involved in regional development.
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Ismael Cruz spoke during the meeting and said that the authorities are working to eradicate hunger and malnutrition, and recalled that according to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), one third of the food produced in the world is wasted.
According to data collected by Fides, the Dominican Republic is among the Latin American countries that has the highest rates of malnutrition, particularly among children, with a rate of 9.8% of chronic malnutrition in children under five. This reality concerns the most important period of growth and, according to Dr. Mery Hernandez, president of the Dominican Medical College (CMD), what affects the country is the low rate of breast-feeding and the lack of prevention programs.
