ASIA/HONG KONG - “The young, source of hope”: Hong Kong local Youth Day builds bridge with World Youth Day in Germany and Asian Youth Day in 2006

Thursday, 1 September 2005

Hong Kong (Fides Service) - “The young, source of hope” was the theme of a local Youth Day organised in Hong Kong by the diocesan Commission for youth pastoral, and held on 21 August. According to the diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao the aim of the Day was to be in spiritual union with the World Youth Day held at the same time in Germany and to start spiritual preparation for Asian Youth Day next year 2006 in Hong Kong. Some 150 young Catholic boys and girls of Hong Kong took part in the local Youth Day held at Sacred Heart parish. There was a special Mass for the occasion at which the young participants sang the official WYD hymn, followed by a presentation of Asian Youth Day. The organisers say the initiative and the choice of the place for the Local Youth Day offered young people in Hong Kong an opportunity to learn more about the spirit of the first missionaries who brought the Gospel to Hong Kong. They also learned what it means to experience and hand on the Gospel’s message of hope. Then they made a significant pilgrimage with four laps, faith, charity, community and knowing yourself. Bishop John Tong Auxiliary of Hong Kong celebrated Mass for the younsters and encouraged them to contribute towards making Asian Youth Day a success. The theme of the day is “Youth: hope of the Asian family”. (Agenzia Fides 01/09/2005 Righe: 18 Parole: 233)
