AFRICA/NIGERIA - Clashes in a suburb of Kano, a missionary to Fides: "The city center is calm"

Wednesday, 22 February 2012

Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - "The city is calm and we have no news of terrorist attacks in the area where we are," says to Fides Fr. Thomas, of the Society of African Missions (SAM), from Kano in the north-west of Nigeria, where, according to agency sources, some shots of explosions followed by gunfire were heard in the suburb of Badawa. A witness claims to have heard at least 6 explosions and were followed by a shootout during curfew hours declared by the authorities to deal with the emergency caused by recurrent attacks of the Boko Haram sect. "I am in the Christian Quarter of the city and I have not heard anything," says the missionary, indirectly confirming the news according to which the violence occurred in the predominantly Muslim area, where police had discovered a cache of the Boko Haram sect. The members of the organization realizing they had been discovered, have therefore hired a gun battle with security forces. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 22/2/2012)
