EUROPE/ITALY - Message from Combonian Chapter Delegates to the Bishops meeting in the Synod for Africa

Tuesday, 6 October 2009

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - “As Combonian Missionaries, born in Africa and for Africa, what matters most is the future of this continent and, above all, of its Church that – no matter the work of so many missionaries from diverse nations and congregations – is called by God to be salt and light for all society.” This is what the participants in the General Chapter of the Combonian Missionaries, taking place in Rome, said in a Message they sent to the Second Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops, opened on October 4.
The document continues: “With joy we have seen the growth of the Church in Africa, solidly founded on the Word incarnate in a host of martyrs and witnesses, ancestors in the faith, who have given their lives for Christ and in service to the local community. This is the reason behind our love for Africa, for its people and for its Church, with the hope that your meeting in the Synodal Assembly will be a moment of grace and communion in a profound examination of the vitality of the Church and her presence as a light and inspiration to all.”
The Combonians send their greetings to the Bishops and highlight how the theme chosen is “of capital importance for the future of the continent, whose people suffer immensely as a result of the complez conflicts that are prolonged in time and left unresolved.” They mention the situations of injustice “which require a sincere conversion of heart of the culture itself, so that in mutual acknowledgment and respect for diversity as a wealth, they may become active participants in the construction of a society that is just, respectful of differences, tolerant, and committed to seeking the common good.”
In concluding their message, the Delegates of the General Chapter assure of their prayer that “this may be a God given occasion for profound renewal of the Church, strengthening her in her great role in terms of morals and as inspiration for a new culture of universal brotherhood,” and they invoke the Holy Spirit, through the intercession of St. Daniel Comboni, Patron of Africa.
