Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - During the Week of Communication that the Church in Brazil is experiencing in view of the 57th World Day of Social Communications, on May 21, the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) has launched the fourth edition of the “Directory of Communication of the Church in Brazil”, a new updated edition.
Professor Moisés Sbardelotto, coordinator of the Group for Reflection on Communication (Grecom), in charge of reviewing and updating the text, has pointed out that 10 years have passed since the last edition of the Directory, and in that time there has been considerable evolution in the field of communication and also in the Church itself. In the new edition, current issues such as digital communication, the processes of "misinformation" and the excessive circulation of news without the possibility of verification, which are taking place in the world, have been taken into consideration.
The introduction to the 359-paragraph document states: "Called to evangelize and, aware that to evangelize is to communicate, the Church in Brazil presents, in this CNBB 99 Document, the main reference of its communicative thinking and its contribution to society. This updated edition of the Communication Directory of the Church in Brazil responds to the aspirations of the transformations in the field of communication and explains what the Church intends by Pastoral care of Communication: a dynamic, dialogical, interactive and multidirectional process. This new update, the work of the Episcopal Commission for social communication, recognizes the cultural and technological progress made since the last edition and incorporates the contributions of Pope Francis with the proposal of the missionary Church that goes forth permanently".
The second national activity of the Communication Week took place yesterday, Thursday 18th: an online conversation on communication in the magisterium of Pope Francis. The evening also marked the launch of the book “Comunicar para humanizar – A comunicação a partir do Papa Francisco”. During the other days, the regional CNBB promoted a series of activities with dioceses and parishes throughout Brazil.
The Working Group for the pastoral Care of Communication, Pascom Brazil, has in fact prepared a pastoral aid for this Week, which can be downloaded free of charge. The aid contains the complete text of the Pope's message, key readings, in-depth articles and prayer readings, as well as liturgical-pastoral proposals for living the World Day. Reading and movie recommendations are also included. Each community, parish, diocese and region will be able to make the best use of the material, promoting face-to-face or online meetings.
On Sunday, May 21, the liturgical feast of the Ascension of the Lord, the Day of Communications will be celebrated at the National Shrine of Aparecida. The 8 a.m. Mass wwill be presided over by the Archbishop of Aparecida, Orlando Brandes, and concelebrated by the president of the Episcopal Commission for communication of the CNBB, Valdir José de Castro, Bishop of Campo Limpio, and will be broadcast by Catholic-inspired television networks.
