AFRICA/MALAWI - The Archdiocese of Lilongwe begins the diocesan Synod

Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - On July 30, in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe in Malawi, the 2022-2023 "Discerning with the Holy Spirit". It is the third diocesan synod after that of 1973-1975 convened by Bishop Patrick Kalilombe to promote among the faithful the need for active participation and that of 2004-2006 desired by Bishop Chimole to emphasize the importance of common service and unity. This path also sees itself as part of the current, more comprehensive synod of the universal church on synodality.
The Archdiocese of Lilongwe invites all people to walk together: "All Catholics are invited to listen with an open heart and mind, to share their life experiences and to give space to the voices of those who are often marginalized or excluded. Just as the first assembly in Jerusalem healed the tensions between the members of the first Christian community, a synod like this should essentially be a process of healing, both from the wounds we have suffered within the church and from those experienced in other areas of our our lives and relationships".
Fr. Vincent Mwakhwawa, President of the Synodal Assembly, outlined the issues the synod will address: "The first consultations will deal with general pastoral issues, the second consultations will focus on the liturgy and the final consultations will focus on finance, investment, administration and social Development".
The President of the Bishops' Conference of Malawi, Archbishop George Desmond Tambala of Lilongwe, at the official opening of the Synod in Maula Cathedral, urged the faithful to use social media wisely, especially when this is done in groups or pages that explicitly bear the name of Catholic.
