Dushanbe (Agenzia Fides) - "It is gradually becoming a tradition for the Caritas organizations operating in Tajikistan to meet and live meetings of sharing. In the last appointment, we took the opportunity to have a representative of Caritas Luxembourg who was visiting our country. In Tajikistan, in addition to local organizations, Caritas Luxembourg, Germany and Switzerland also operate and often their representatives manage to take part in our meetings. These exchanges do not represent the first steps towards the organization of a forum dedicated to Caritas in our country", explains a note sent to Agenzia Fides by Caritas of Tajikistan.
Operating since 2004, the pastoral and charitable organization of the Bishops of the country pays much attention to collaboration with the international network, with the aim of improving and expanding the social and charitable service offered. In this perspective, last May, a small delegation represented the Tajika organization during the XXI General Assembly of Caritas Internationalis. The note reads: “It was, for the president of Caritas Fr. Pedro Ramiro Lopez and for the staff of the Tajik volunteers present, an exciting moment of growth. Upon returning home, Fr. Pedro shared all the information about the event with the staff, using numerous materials and presentations. The strategic framework of Caritas Internationalis and the many decrees ratified during the Assembly become a guide for us”. The note also points out that, during the Roman event, members of Caritas Tajikistan were able to present their support to "Share the Journey", the global campaign organized by Caritas Internationalis, which invites until the end of 2019 to join the challenge of traveling a million kilometers in solidarity with migrants and refugees.
The Catholic presence in Tajikistan exists since 1970. The first faithful were mostly Germans from Russia, Ukraine and Lithuania, deported to the country when the Soviet Union existed. Because of the communist regime, for years the communities of Tajikistan were completely isolated from the universal Church, until the establishment of the Missio sui iuris, which took place on September 29, 1997. In this context, charitable actions started as early as 1983 by small groups, which officially merged into Caritas starting in 2004. Since then, the organization has consolidated projects concerning the supply of water, sanitation and social support for the most disadvantaged. (LF) (Agenzia Fides, 8/7/2019)
