AFRICA/RWANDA - Religious denominations reaffirm their commitment to national reconciliation

Kigali (Agenzia Fides) - "We are convinced that unity and reconciliation are in line with what the Holy Scriptures say, that is why in 2000 we established Christian Gacaca that helped to deliver restorative justice to our people. We have also published books on unity and reconciliation", said His Exc. Mgr. Philippe Rukamba, Bishop of Butare to Rwanda Times, who explained the sense of commitment of the Catholic Church in the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC).
Leaders of various religious denominations across the country have committed to join hands with the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC) by including the Ndi Umunyarwanda (I am Rwandan) programme in their preaching to promote cohesion among believers.
In this regard, Retired Anglican Bishop John Kabango Rucyahana, President of NURC, explained that "what we have so far achieved in terms of unity and reconciliation is satisfactory but we want to collaborate and cooperate with religious and faith based organizations to ensure that Ndi Umunyarwanda is promoted, which will fast-track reconciliation among our people".
Gacaca courts are traditional courts with the aim of judging those accused of crimes such as looting and wounding people during the tragic events of 1994 (see Fides 21/10/2009). (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 21/10/2016)
