San Juan (Agenzia Fides) - While the Puerto Rican government cannot seem to recover from the deep economic crisis in which it has collapsed (see Fides 18/03/2016), now teachers in public and private schools risk retirement, since the government has begun to withhold payment of pension obligations.
Thus the pensions of public school teachers, police, firefighters and other thousands of government employees could also be cut.
Puerto Rico has about 120,000 government employees and thousands of public sector pensioners. The capital of public administrations should cover pension obligations in case of need, but also that money is now running out.
The situation of Catholic schools is particularly terrible due to the drop out of pupils. So teachers’ pensions and also their jobs are at risk. In less than 10 years 10% of the population have left the country. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 12/04/2016)
