AFRICA - The business of North Korea in Africa

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - While threats of nuclear war envelop the Korean Peninsula, the African press highlights the business of the Pyongyang regime in Africa.
At least 400 North Korean workers are engaged in Equatorial Guinea in the construction of public works, employed by Western and North Korean companies. One of these has just opened its office in Malabo (the capital of Equatorial Guinea), while another North Korean enterprise, specialized in computer, provided the sophisticated security system and telecommunications of the Presidential Palace. According to some interpretations, the provision includes video surveillance and interception of communications systems. Some experts believe that North Korean workers engaged in Africa are forced to pay up to 70-80% of their salary to their government.
Another African Country where there are companies and North Korean workers is Namibia. According to a United Nations investigation, made known at the end of February, a North Koreaan company is involved in several projects of the Namibian Defense, in particular in the military academy building and the new headquarters of the Ministry of Defense.
The Namibian government has confirmed the existence of commercial ties with North Korea, but has denied reports that among the contracts negotiated with Pyongyang there is the construction of a munitions factory in the capital, Windhoek, which would constitute a violation of the sanctions imposed by the UN to the north Korean regime for its nuclear and missile programs.
The business relations with some African Countries is considered by UN experts a way for Pyongyang to circumvent the sanctions imposed by the international community, in order to obtain funds to finance its rearm with weapons of mass destruction. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 10/03/2016)
