AFRICA/MALAWI - Appointment of the Bishop of Zomba

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On 15 October 2015 the Holy Father appointed Rev. Fr. George Desmond Tambala, O.C.D., General Definitor of the PP. Discalced Carmelites as Bishop of the diocese of Zomba (Malawi).
Rev. Fr. George Desmond Tambala, O.C.D., was born on November 11, 1968 in the diocese of Zomba. After attending primary school in Ulongwe, he went to the Zomba Nankhunda Child Jesus Minor Seminary. He entered the Community of the PP. Discalced Carmelites in 1990. He followed the two-year philosophical course at the Inter-Congregational Balaka Seminary, and completed his theological studies at Tangaza College in Nairobi, Kenya. He was ordained a priest on 13 April 1996.
Since ordination he has held the following pastoral and academic roles: 1996-1998: Assistant priest in Kapiri, in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, Malawi; 1998-2000: Studies in Spain (Avila and Vitoria) for a Licentiate in Theology; 2000-2002: Master of Postulants and professor of Spirituality at the Inter-Congregational Seminary in Balaka; 2002-2008: Superior and Provincial Delegate at the Discalced Carmelites in Malawi and Vice-director of the St. John of the Cross Spirituality Center in Nyungwe-Blantyre; 2009-2015: Definitor of the PP. Discalced Carmelites, in charge of Africa and Madagascar. Since 2015 Definitor of the PP. Discalced Carmelites.
He was President of the Association of Major Superiors of Malawi (A.M.R.I.M.). (SL) (Agenzia Fides 15/10/2015)
