San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - The economic conditions and poverty in the Country are an aggravating factor for the health of HIV-positive children, who often cannot be cured because family members are unable to bring them to health facilities. The Benjamín Bloom Children's Hospital is treating 323 children with HIV. According to "Inocencia Foundation" and UNICEF, 41% of the families of children affected by the virus do not even have an income equivalent to the minimum wage. Furthermore, 33% has no work stability.
Nutrition is another factor that affects the health of these children: 37% of the families involved in the study said they have no access to basic foodstuffs. Many of these children are abandoned by parents or relatives. These children do not have access to play ground areas, computer and other places of education and remain marginalized in schools or communities. San Salvador is the department which has the highest number of infections, 120 children with HIV, while Morazán is the department with the lowest number. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 21/04/2015)
