AFRICA/GUINEA BISSAU - Diocese of Bissau opens a house for 100 children

Wednesday, 30 March 2011

Bissau (Agenzia Fides) – With the approval of the Guinean executive, expressed by the Minister for women's affairs, social cohesion and the fight against poverty, the Babaram House for Children in the Diocese of Bissau will be officially inaugurated on April 16.” As stated in a release sent to Fides, 'Babaram' in the local language means the stuff that surrounds and protects children. Usually it is given in the most important moments in the life of a person to indicate commitment to solidarity with the homeless and those who are in need.
Authorisation for opening the home was signed off by Minister Maria de Lourdes Vaz, after a survey that verified the minimum standards for childcare were in place. Located on the old site of a boarding school in Bor, the structure is capable of accommodating 100 children, with four dormitories that will house boys and girls aged up to 12 years. In the first stage, the house will welcome displaced children for health reasons. For this reason, NGOs have already been contacted that are active in major hospitals in the care sector.
