Monday, 6 September 2010

Hua Lien (Agenzia Fides) – Cultural pluralism and communion marked the solemn celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the diocesan congregation of Sisters of St. Martha in the Diocese of Hua Lien, Taiwan. According to information gathered by Fides, over 1,400 faithful attended the Jubilee Mass, which was presided by Archbishop Philip Huang Jaw-Ming of Hua Lien and concelebrated by four bishops and 48 priests . The Sisters of Santa Marta, representing various local ethnic groups on the island of Taiwan and the Philippines, also took up the gifts in the offertory. To celebrate 50 years of missionary service, the congregation also held a series of courses in spiritual formation for lay people.
The Congregation was founded on March 1, 1960 by Msgr. Andrew Verineux, then Vicar Apostolic, of French origin, with the aim of giving glory to the Lord, sanctifying themselves, and forming the true spirit of religious life through pastoral work, catechism, and social activities (visits to families, the elderly, and the sick). The Sisters still strictly observe three hours of prayer and daily meditation as a source of strength for their apostolate. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 06/09/2010)
