AFRICA/GUINEA BISSAU - Nuncio Montemayor to visit Guinea Bissau March 6-12

Bissau (Agenzia Fides) – Archbishop Luis Mariano Montemayor, Papal Representative in Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Mauritania and Senegal (where he resides), is scheduled to visit Guinea-Bissau March 6 to 12. During the visit, accompanied by Undersecretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Fr. Massimo Cenci, PIME, the Archbishop will visit the seminaries, the diocesan house of formation, and several social works, both in Bissau and Bafata. Father Bernardo Gomes, Rector of the Major Seminary of Guinea Bissau, expressed his satisfaction, noting that their presence strengthens the unity of the Church. The Seminary in Bissau was founded 9 years ago and this is the first time it is visited by the Apostolic Nuncio. Archbishop Montemayor, who was born in Buenos Aires in 1956, was appointed Papal Nuncio to Senegal and Cape Verde, as well as Apostolic Delegate to Mauritania on June 19, 2008, and was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Guinea Bissau on September 17, 2008. Guinea Bissau has a population of 1,419,000 inhabitants, including 186,000 Catholics. There are 2 ecclesiastical circumscriptions (Bafata and Bissau), 33 parishes, 30 mission stations, 2 Bishops, 22 diocesan priests and 58 religious priests, 12 religious brothers and 136 religious sisters .
