AMERICA/HONDURAS - Appointment of bishop of La Ceiba

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Jenrry Johel Velásquez Hernández, of the clergy of Comayagua, until now rector of the Cristo Sumo Sacerdote Major Seminary in Comayagua, as bishop of the diocese of La Ceiba, Honduras.
Msgr. Jenrry Johel Velásquez Hernández was born on 23 July 1977 in San Antonio la Cuesta, San Jerónimo, Honduras. He studied philosophy and theology at the Cristo Sumo Sacerdote Major Seminary of the diocese of Comayagua, and was awarded a licentiate in biblical theology from the Pontifical Saint Thomas Aquinas University – Angelicum, Rome.
He was ordained a priest on 7 December 2002.
He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Siguatepeque and prefect of studies in the major seminary of the diocese of Comayagua (2003-2004), head of the preparatory year (2005), formator in the Cristo Sumo Sacerdote Major Seminary (2010-2021), professor of sacred scripture (since 2010), member of the Presbyteral College of the diocese of Comayagua (since 2020), and parish priest of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Lamaní (2021-2024). Since 2025 he has served as rector of the Cristo Sumo Sacerdote Major Seminary and member of the College of Consultors. (EG) (Agenzia Fides, 12/6/2025)
