Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - "I am pleased to announce that on December 8th, I will hold a consistory for the appointment of new cardinals". As has often happened in these years of his pontificate, Pope Francis announced during the Angelus a consistory in which he will create a total of 21 new cardinals.
Their origin, as underlined by the Pontiff, "reflects the universality of the Church, that continues to announce God's merciful love to all people" and "manifests the inseparable bond between the See of Peter and the particular Churches spread throughout the world". Four Asian dioceses (Tokyo in Japan, Kalookan in the Philippines, Bogor in Indonesia and Tehran-Ispahan in Iran), two African dioceses (Abidjan in the Ivory Coast and Algiers in Algeria), six American dioceses, including five Latin American dioceses (Lima in Peru, Santiago del Estero in Argentina, Guayaquil in Ecuador, Santiago de Chile in Chile, Porto Alegre in Brazil) and one Canadian dioceses (Toronto) will have a cardinal in the future. And Oceania will also have a new cardinal, the Bishop of the Eparchy of Saints Peter and Paul of Melbourne of the Ukrainians, in Serbia (Beograd-Smederevo) and in Italy (Turin).
They are joined by two from the Roman Curia, the Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome, the Coadjutor Archpriest of Santa Maria Maggiore, an English Dominican theologian and an Apostolic Nuncio.
The latter is the only one of the new cardinals who will not be eligible for election in a future conclave due to the age limit.

In total, Pope Francis has appointed 142 cardinals in the almost twelve years of his pontificate, of whom 113 are eligible to vote.
