AMERICA/PERU - Caritas and regional authorities of San Martín join forces for Covid vaccination in indigenous communities

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - The Indigenous Communities Vaccination Promotion and Awareness Project of the Peruvian Amazon, to contain the deadly effects of the pandemic", is supported by Caritas Germany and implemented by Caritas Peru, Caritas Moyobamba and Caritas Selva Central. In order to better coordinate the vaccination process in the indigenous communities of the Awajún district, Caritas has signed a framework agreement with the San Martín region and the San Martín Regional Health Directorate. According to news from the Episcopal Conference, sent to Fides, the Deputy Governor of the San Martín region, Dr. Noemí Aguilar Puerta, said that this is the first time that she has worked with an important ally like Caritas and was very pleased to be able to strengthen ties and join efforts for the development of the project. She also agreed on the need to support the dissemination of advertising messages, through local radio and television. For his part, Ángel Allccarima, from Caritas Peru, said that the signing of the inter-institutional agreements was very important for the development of the planned actions. The Indigenous Communities Vaccination Promotion and Awareness Project aims to increase the number of people vaccinated with the first, second and third doses in indigenous communities, in order to counter the deadly effects of the pandemic. It is planned to involve 19 Amerindian communities of Caritas Moyobamba and Selva Central, through the implementation of workshops and communication campaigns aimed at combating misinformation and doubts about vaccination, strengthening local health officials.
