São José dos Pinhais (Agenzia Fides) - For the first time in the history of the "Sul 2" Region of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB), the Ukrainian Catholic Archdiocese of John the Baptist hosted the Assembly of Bishops of Paraná, which began on March 13 and ends today, March 15. As reported by the Brazilian Bishops' Conference, the bishops of Paraná met in the "Colonia Marcelino" in São José dos Pinhais for the first assembly of the year. The secretary of the Sul 2 region, Father Valdecir Badzinski, pointed out that the bishops are meeting again on site after more than a year in which only online meetings were held because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting was also an opportunity to "show solidarity, closeness and communion with the Ukrainian brothers and sisters, who are suffering from the war that is taking place in Ukraine". All the Archbishops and Bishops of Paraná, the two Ukrainian Bishops, the President of the Regional Commission for Priests, Father Emerson Lipinski, and the Executive Secretary of the Sul 2 region of the bishops' conference, Father Valdecir Badzinski, took part in this Assembly. The work program for these days included an assessment of the pastoral journey of the Church in Paraná and the planning of the current year's activities, including the the Mission of Saint Paul VI in Guinea-Bissau, the diocesan phase in preparation for the Synod of Bishops and some administrative issues.
The Archbishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Metropolia St. John the Baptist, Fr, Volodemer Koubetch, stressed that the assembly represents a very significant moment: "First of all, it is about strengthening this community, which is historic. We are celebrating the centenary of the visit of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, one of the main leaders of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, both ecclesiastical and civil, in Ukraine. We also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Eparchy of São Batista, which has been an archdiocese since 2014. The Sul 2 Region of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference, the Ukrainian Catholic Archdiocese of St. John the Baptist and the Ukrainian Eparchy of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception together with Caritas Paraná have launched the "For Ukraine, for Life" campaign, to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine (see Fides, 10/3/2022) (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 15/3/2022)
