San José (Agenzia Fides) - "Like a family, Costa Rica went to vote on February 6. We congratulate all those who participated in this election day with their vote; as well as all those who put their name to be considered for an office elected by the people". The Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Costa Rica congratulated the citizens for their democratic participation despite the very high abstention figures, and reiterated the call to join efforts to improve the quality of life (see Fides, 28/9/2021; 4/2/2022).
The Bishops congratulate the elected deputies and invite them "to work for the common good, protecting, in particular, the interests of those who are least protected". As expected, a second round is needed for the Presidency of the Republic: José María Figueres Olsen of the National Liberation Party and Rodrigo Chaves Robles of the Social Democratic Progress Party will participate in the ballot on 3 April. The Bishops invite them "to present their proposals clearly, for the good of the country, in a campaign from now to April, which is a campaign of ideas, characterized by respect and awareness of working to advance Costa Rica".
"Our appeal is to join efforts to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of our country - they continue - in particular to bring integral development to the poorest and unprotected classes". In view of the second round of elections, the Bishops re-launch their appeal to defend democracy and to prevail the will to work for the common good, both on the part of the electors and the elected.
