Abidjan (Agenzia Fides) - Following tradition in Ivory Coast, every year, on the third Sunday of Advent, the local Church dedicates particular attention to its social branch, Caritas, through the National Day of Caritas, whose theme this year is "Driven by the charity of Christ, we open our hearts to the misery of our brothers and our hands to sharing". This year, the diocese chosen to host the official celebrations on Sunday, December 13, is San Pedro, in the southeast of the country.
In preparation for the day, the National Direction of Caritas has decided to precede it with a week of activities, which was inaugurated on Sunday 6 December at the parish of Saint Pierre d'Anoumabo, municipality of Marcory in the archdiocese. from Abidjan. The goal is to enable the entire donor community to prepare in the best possible way.
At the opening of the National Week of Caritas, Fr. Jean Pierre Tiémélé, National Executive Secretary of Caritas Ivory Coast provided important information contained in the message delivered on this occasion by His Exc. Mgr. Bruno Yedo Essoh, Bishop of Bondoukou and President of the Episcopal Commission for integral human development. It is a question of establishing a Caritas reserve fund, to satisfy the will of Ivorian Bishops who wish to respond effectively to the needs of the most disadvantaged in all circumstances, particularly during major crises.
But, "one of its structures, specialized in social pastoral care, Caritas, does not have stable and solid resources", reads Mgr. Bruno's message, hence the appeal of the Bishops to support this communion project of the Catholic Church". The Caritas Reserve Fund should allow the launch of income-generating activities to support vulnerable people at both the diocesan and national levels.
National Caritas Week, whose epicenter is Sunday 13 December, National Caritas Day, is full of numerous activities including meetings and visits to the sick through the diocesan and parish Caritas. (S.S.) (Agenzia Fides, 10/12/2020)
