AMERICA/CUBA - About 7,000 Cuban migrants in difficulty in Central America; Pope's appeal

Panama (Agenzia Fides) - "My thoughts in this moment go out to the numerous Cuban migrants who find themselves in difficulty in Central America, many of whom are victims of human trafficking. I invite the Countries of the Region to renew with generosity all necessary efforts in order to find a rapid solution to this humanitarian drama": this is the Holy Father's appeal, launched after after the Angelus prayer on, December 27.
In the early days of November approximately 3,000 Cubans who, on their journey to the United States, had been stopped at the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, as Nicaragua does not allow them entry into the country, even for transit (see Fides 25/11/2015). Now the number has reached about 7,000.
On December 25, Panamanian Cardinal Jose Luis Lacunza, Bishop of David, during the Christmas Mass celebrated in Paso Canoas (Panama), where 300 Cuban migrants were welcomed, called for a political solution to the crisis that this group of people are experiencing. As reported by the local television (TVN Panama), the Cardinal said: "We must find political solutions as soon as possible, because one cannot continue like this much longer".
About 1,000 migrants are blocked in Panama and were welcomed in the Catholic and Evangelical Church structures. Almost all come from Ecuador. In recent days, a meeting in Mexico of the members of the "Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana" (SICA) ended without any positive results.
