Lima (Agenzia Fides) - Every year leukemia affects the health of about 1,200 boys and girls who live in poverty. It is actually a type of cancer that occurs frequently in childhood, especially between 3 and 4 years of age. Since 2012 the State has promoted the program Plan Esperanza to improve integral care towards cancer and access to oncological services in Peru, according to technological progresses and the availability of resources. Thanks to this program, the life expectancy of this population has increased by 70%; with early diagnosis, 80% of patients respond well to chemotherapy. From October 2012 to June 2015, nearly 150,000 patients were assisted. Of these, 2,753 were suffering from leukemia, 1,322 of them children. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 16/11/2015)
