Queretaro (Agenzia Fides) - The "caravan of migrants", now in its sixth edition began on the evening of 16 December and this year sees the participation of a very high number of vehicles never seen before: about 500. The caravan starts from Laredo, Texas (USA) and travels towards the Sierra of Queretaro, Mexico. Residents in the United States return home to spend Christmas with their relatives.
The note sent to Fides from a local source reports that the departure ceremony was attended by the governor, Francisco Domínguez Servien and by the Bishop of Nuevo Laredo, Mgr. Gustavo Rodriguez Vega. It was not possible to calculate the precise number of persons, but each vehicle is occupied by entire families, each consisting of three to six members. All participants are registered and plan to cross the border at night in order to be able to be received by the authorities the next day and attend an event at the Civic Center of Tamaulipas (Mexico).
Other groups join each other during the journey. While the caravan along the US territory is accompanied by the staff of the Migration Office. In the Mexican territory members of the army and federal police escort the caravan to avoid attacks by criminal gangs. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 18/12/2015)
