ASIA/SYRIA - The Maronite Patriarch visits Syria, "a sign of love for the Syrian people"

Tartus (Agenzia Fides) - Maronite Patriarch Boutros Bechara Rai carried out a two-day visit to Syria, stopping in the city of Tartus, in the coastal region of Latakia. During the visit, which began on Sunday, December 6, the Primate of the Maronite Church celebrated the ordination of Joseph Tobji, the new Maronite Archbishop of Aleppo. The visit to Syria – said Patriarch Rai to the local media, - "is a sign of love and a desire for peace for all the Syrian people". In Tartus, the Maronite Patriarch had occasion to meet, among others, Archbishop Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio in Syria, and the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch Yohanna X. In some statements to the Lebanese media, Patriarch Rai also reported of having convened all the leaders of the Christian Lebanese political forces in the patriarchal see of Bkerké to discuss the possible agreement on the candidacy of Suleiman Franjieh, head of the Marada party, to the office of President of the Republic of Lebanon, vacant since May 2014.
