ASIA/HOLY LAND - The Heads of Churches in Jerusalem condemn the violence at the Temple Mount

Monday, 21 September 2015 area crisis

Jerusalem (Agenzia Fides) - The Heads of Churches in Jerusalem express "serious concern" about the recent violence carried out on the Temple Mount in the clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian Muslims, and express strong condemnation regarding the initiatives with which the aim is to tamper with the rules that govern access and management to Holy Sites. In recent days, the Israeli security forces had allowed access only to adults over the age of forty.
The concerns and convictions of the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem are found in a statement, released by the official sources of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. "Muslims", said the statement, also sent to Agenzia Fides "have the right to free access and worship to the Al Aqsa Mosque". Christian leaders affirm that all Holy Sites "need constant watchful protection".
The statement is signed by 13 Patriarchs, Bishops and Heads of Churches and Christian communities in Jerusalem, including Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III, Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal and Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, OFM, Custos of the Holy Land. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 21/09/2015)
