AFRICA/BURUNDI - Burundi threatens the risk of a civil war

Friday, 6 November 2015 area crisis

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - "We directly live the concerns expressed by the international community on the situation in our Country, because every day we see the bodies of people killed during the night here in Bujumbura and in other parts of Burundi" say to Agenzia Fides Church sources in Bujumbura, capital of Burundi, in the throes of a serious crisis because of the disputed third term of President Pierre Nkurunziza.
"Even this morning the bodies of two people were found while, as most nights, gunfire in several districts of the capital were heard" our sources say, who for security reasons remain unknown. "The situation is really explosive, also because the government has issued an ultimatum that expires on Saturday, November 7 hoping that the opposition groups lay down their weapons, otherwise they will be disarmed by force, using all means the police and the army have available".
"People are moving en masse to other neighborhoods for fear of what might happen when the ultimatum expires" say the sources. "This also happens in the province where the number of displaced persons increases".
"There is no point in disarming the armed opposition if the real causes of the conflict are not solved through dialogue", say our sources.
Both the African Union and the International Crisis Group have launched the alarm on the imminent risk that the crisis explodes into a real civil war. "The fact is that in addition to the regular army, which is internally divided, there are militias loyal to the President, while on the other hand there are gangs and militias of the armed opposition", concludes Fides sources.
