Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - Heavy fighting took place last night and this morning in Bujumbura, capital of Burundi, where rebels who oppose the third term of President Pierre Nkurunziza, attacked all the barracks in the capital (Muha, Ngagara and ISCAM). According to information gathered by Agenzia Fides, the fighting which started at around 4am last night were particularly violent but forces loyal to President Nkurunziza said the attacks did not have a postive outcome.
According to a presidential spokesman, the attackers intended to release the detainees in the central prison in Bujumbura. The rebels seem to have been able to count on the complicity within the military facilities attacked.
On December 9, rumors had spread of an impending coup and a significant increase in the security forces deployed in the capital was noticed. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 11/12/2015)
