Al-Fashir (Agenzia Fides) - Several children living in refugee camps in the town of Saraf Umra, North Darfur, continue to die of a disease which has not yet been identified and spread among the population about two months ago. In just one week 10 people died, 7 of them children in Dankoj and Jebel camps. According to local sources, the symptoms of the disease involve swelling on the body, high fever, diarrhea, vomiting and joint pain. There are many cases registered in the hospital in Saraf Umra.
In a statement to Radio Dabanga, the coordinator of the refugee camps has criticized the doctors at the hospital for not having identified or notified the disease to the local Ministry of Health. Already a month ago he had reported an outbreak of an unknown disease and the shortage of medicines. In addition, in September, after torrential rains, stagnant waters and the proliferation of mosquitoes, several people had died, including children. The disease appeared for the first time in Jayeen Thilo and Subyan Khavo, west of the town of Saraf Umra, as well as in the villages of Melessa and Numera in the east of Saraf Umra.
