La Rioja (Agenzia Fides) - The mining company MIDAIS withdraws from Angulos, Department in Famatina in La Rioja (Argentina). This was officially announced by the Bishop of the Diocese of La Rioja, His Exc. Mgr. Marcelo Daniel Colombo and Deputy Governor Sergio Casas, in representing the Government. Casas informed that the decision of the government of the Province places itself within the context of the commitment to dialogue on behalf of the State. Although the government considers the mining activity as a main activity for development, "we must always show signs and gestures for dialogue", and stressed that "the bishop, Monsignor Marcelo Colombo mediated in the decision-making process" .
According to information sent to Fides, the group of residents camped along the road leading to the temporary headquarters of the offices of the mine, told the local press that "Mgr. Colombo’s intervention was the most successful and human". Casas told the local press that "the provincial government wanted to give its contribution in order to create social peace".
Mgr. Colombo's pastoral letter is very direct: "I insisted on the necessity of social consensus for those business initiatives that could affect the environment and the health of the population", said the Bishop, who continues: "I appreciate the confidence of all people involved in this process to overcome the conflict, leaving aside personal interests. I encourage everyone to continue to build together a new era in which dialogue can sow the path of social friendship and contribute to the common good of all the inhabitants of La Rioja".
In the area, according to data provided by the local press, this is the third mining company, after Barrick Gold and Osisko, that has withdrawn from the region. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 05/11/2015)
