Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - Tomorrow, November 4, the Special Committee on Climate Change, the Mexican Institute of Christian social doctrine and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation will present the forum entitled "Poverty and climate change. Presentation of the encyclical Laudato Sì", which will be coordinated by Senator Silvia Garza Galvan, Chairman of the Special Committee on Climate Change. The event will be held in the auditorium of the Senate.
The note sent to Fides by the Archdiocese of Mexico says "For the first time, the Bishops of Mexico will present a document of Pope Francis in this legislative seat". The Catholic Church will be represented by His Exc. Mgr. Rogelio Cabrera López, Archbishop of Monterrey, and His Exc. Mgr. Juan Armando Pérez Talamantes, auxiliary Bishop of the same archdiocese. Mrs Maria Amparo Martínez Arroyo, Director General of the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change, will present a reading of Laudato Sì from a scientific point of view.
This represents an unprecedented fact, in a Country like Mexico, where government institutions have been historically characterized by strong secularism and anti-clericalism. On 15 October, the Mexican Senate unanimously approved the invitation, which will be addressed to Pope Francis, to visit the Senate during his next pastoral visit to Mexico, in February 2016.
