San José (Agenzia Fides) - In Costa Rica there is a real and serious outbreak of cases of violence against children aged between 1 and 3. According to data from the National Pediatric Hospital (HNN), a total of 2,200 complaints of violence against minors was recorded last year. This year, local authorities expect an increase of another 800 cases. Children who do not yet know how to speak, and who are not able to denounce what they suffer, are victims of physical, psychological and sexual abuse. Most of the complaints come from San José, but an increase was detected in the communities of coastal areas of the provinces of Limón, Guanacaste and Puntarenas. A child subject to violence at an early age, has neurological consequences and compromises learning abilities and attitudes of behavior, in addition to causing health problems. The recorded data may not be complete because, in addition to cases assisted by the HNN, there are those followed by other health care systems of the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS).
