Peshawar (Agenzia Fides) - "The earthquake devastated Peshawar and the number of dead has risen to 500, while the injured number at least two thousand. The government is doing its best. Christian NGOs have also mobilised. There are no Christians among the casualties but some churches have suffered damaged. The event is an occasion to show interreligious solidarity. Pakistani Christians are good citizens, even if certain extremists try to sow hatred and destroy the peace and harmony": Fides was told by Anglican Pastor Rasheed Nazir, of All Saints Church, Peshawar, diocesan secretary of the Anglican Church of Pakistan, following the earth tremor which struck the city. The 7.5 quake, registered in the mountain region between Afghanistan and Pakistan, caused panic in Kabul, Peshawar, Islamabad, and also in Karachi, a city in southern Pakistan. In Peshawar, thousands took to the streets out of fear while the earth shook for several minutes. " Christians here are praying incessantly and fervently, entrusting the dead and their families to the mercy of God ", concludes F. Nazir.
The Anglican parish vicar Samson Anwar told Fides: "We will put all our energy and resources at the service of solidarity with those mourning and suffering". (PA) (Agenzia Fides 27/10/2015)
