Guanajuato (Agenzia Fides) - On 28 October the Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico will discuss the legalization of marijuana, an issue that the Church proposed to be dealt with in a thorough way and analyze the problems generated by the consumption of marijuana.
Two testimonies on this subject have been sent to Fides. His Exc. Mgr. José de Jesús Martínez Zepeda, Bishop of Irapuato, Guanajuato, said that the country is becoming a copy of what happens in other countries, because "not only are there serious social problems with drug trafficking, but also in our urban environment we already have alcohol problems among the population, and now we must also add this drug problem".
The Bishop of the Diocese of Nezahualcoyotl, His Exc. Mgr. Héctor Luis Morales Sánchez, stressed that to avoid problems in the decisions on the possible legalization of marijuana, all sectors of society should determine the potential benefits or harm, even parents. He added that the diversity of opinion is essential, how to analyze the pros and cons, any diseases derived from the consumption and the consequences in people, before making a decision. Finally, he claimed not to be for or against the possible legalization of marijuana, but reiterated that its possible regulation must still be justified. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 21/10/2015)
