AMERICA/HAITI - Elections on 25 October: the concerns of the Church

Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - Less than a week before the presidential, parliamentary and municipal elections, scheduled for Sunday, October 25, the Episcopal Conference of Haiti (CEH) has expressed some concerns. First of all the sad experience of 9 August; then, in general, because elections in Haiti are still sadly characterized by violence (see Fides 10/08/2015). The note sent to Fides reports the words of the spokesman of the CEH, Mgr. Patrick Aris: "We have never been able to act as a modern state, when it comes to organizing elections".
For Mgr. Aris "there was no real election campaign. We cannot say that in the group of 54 candidates there is a significant difference between one and the other".
The frequently asked question by the population on why the Catholic Church does not present candidates, as the Protestants did, the CEH spokesman responded: "Not only because this is prohibited by the Code of Canon Law, but because according to the experience of the Catholic Church, the logic of the 'party' divides more than unites. The Church's mission is to unite, to create a united community, to put together, not separate as parties do".
Regarding the elections of August 9, Mgr. Aris recalls that "they were largely marked by widespread irregularities, reported by the Church". (CE) (Agenzia Fides 21/10/2015)
