Matagalpa (Agenzia Fides) - The government of Nicaragua, led by Daniel Ortega, declared the beginning of the mining activity in the municipality of Rancho Grande, Matagalpa "not feasible", through an official statement. According to information sent to Agenzia Fides a few days ago, on October 3, residents in the area had expressed their opposition to the project with a march, sponsored by the Bishop of the diocese of Matagalpa, His Exc. Mgr. Rolando José Álvarez Lagos, calling for a referendum to decide on the activities of the mines in the municipality. The government anticipated its decision to Mgr. Alvarez, reached by telephone by a senior government representative.
"I want to emphasize the government's action of declaring the project unfeasible, because it listened to the voice of the crowded march" said Mgr. Alvarez. It is estimated that the march was attended by more than 15,000 people. Last week Mgr. Alvarez had informed the media that the civil community had assumed the defense of the environment in Rancho Grande because it is a fertile land for agriculture and livestock. It seems that the attitude of the authorities is aimed at trying to prevent the recurrence of situations such as the mining town of El Limon (see Fides 08/10/2015) (CE) (Agenzia Fides 19/10/2015)
