Puebla (Agenzia Fides) - For the first time a solemn Mass was celebrated in Nahuatl (the native language) in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City which was presided by the Archbishop of Puebla, His Exc. Mgr. Victor Sanchez, President of the Episcopal Commission for the Biblical Pastoral.
The celebration, organized by the Culture of the Mexican Episcopal Conference (CEM) and the Indigenous Pastoral Commission, saw the participation of representatives of 20 dioceses of Mexico.
For the celebration that took place yesterday, Tuesday, October 13, the texts, whose translation had been agreed among about 50 groups who speak this language from at least 12 archdioceses and dioceses in the country, and with the missionaries of two religious congregations were used, as His Exc. Mgr. Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel, Archbishop of San Cristobal de las Casas and President of the Commission for the Culture of CEM recalled.
Mgr. Arizmendi Esquivel delivered the homily during the celebration, and after a moment of reflection on the example of Mary, Mother of God and our mother, said: "This is what the Nahuatl people need: hope. This is what our native people need: hope. They have a history, have a culture, have a present and a future".
The translation in Nahuatl was sponsored by CEM, through the Commissions for the Biblical Pastoral, Pastoral Liturgy, Doctrine of the Faith, and Indigenous Pastoral Ministry of Culture already in August 2012. Since then there have been 11 study and work meetings which involved most of the indigenous communities of Nahuatl culture. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 14/10/2015)
