AMERICA/NICARAGUA - Clashes between police and protesters, the Church is the only intermediary

Managua (Agenzia Fides) - A policeman was killed, 31 were wounded: 8 civilians and 23 policemen, after the clash on Tuesday, October 6 among workers of the Canadian mine B2Gold and police, during a protest in the northwest of Nicaragua. The protest, caused by the dismissal of three workers, most of the 800 workers of B2Gold took part. The clashes occurred in the town of Malpaisillo, 142 km northwest of the capital, where B2Gold manages the "El Limon" gold mine. According to information sent to Fides, the police were attacked with stones, sticks and homemade bombs. The police report says that during the clashes protesters destroyed the police station, a patrol car, a bus and three trucks belonging to B2Gold company. Yesterday, through a statement of the workers' union, the workers said they were saddened by the death of the policeman and are still open to dialogue.
