Bombay (Agenzia Fides) - The government of the Indian state of Maharashtra has temporarily suspended the representation of a play entitled "Agnes of God", considered by local Catholics offensive towards their religion. As Fides learns, after protests submitted to government offices by the faithful of the "Catholic Secular Forum", the minister for minorities Eknath Khadse has ordered a review of the work before being staged.
In recent days, Christians protested in front of theaters and sent a Memorandum to the government stating that the work contains "unpleasant scenes that hurt religious sentiments". "Agnes of God" is the story of a young nun who gives birth and kills the baby she delivers. Catholic groups have objected to the use of the phrase "immaculate conception" in advertisements for the play. Other Catholic groups have filed a criminal complaint to the police. Catholics have asked the public support of the Bishops of the state in this campaign. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 07/10/2015)
