Belgaum (Agenzia Fides) - A Catholic cemetery was vandalized in Belgaum, in the Indian state of Karnataka. The vandals destroyed the tombs and crosses, and also damaged some buildings in the local cemetery. As reported to Fides, the incident, which occurred in past days, was denounced by some Catholics who had to bury the dead. The local priests and the Bishop were alerted and, after the complaint, the police filed an investigation
In a note sent to Fides, His Exc. Mgr. Peter Machado, Bishop of Belgaum, says that "the incident has hurt the community, since the cemetery is considered the second holiest site, after the church". "I pray that God forgives the perpetrators of this cowardly act", he said.
Among other recent violence, reported to Agenzia Fides, a group of Hindu radicals attacked a group of Christians with guns and sticks during a prayer meeting in a village in the state of Jharkhand, warning the faithful to worship some Hindu Gods.
Furthermore, Christians in the state of Chhattisgarh were assaulted after the disposal of the head of the local village Karmeri to ban all religious activities which are not Hindu. The order, totally unconstitutional, was also adopted in other villages. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 30/09/2015)
